webOS is a closed system: unlike an Android box, you only install what the LG Content Store offers for your model. The catalog of IPTV applications is narrower than on Android TV, and it varies depending on the year of the television, the version of webOS and the country of the LG account. A recent model will often offer more players than a TV several years old still on an old version. The good news: once you find the right player, setup only takes a few minutes, and your credentials remain the same as on any other device. This guide covers the simplest path, the alternatives, and the most common problems on LG.
🧭 What does webOS allow (and not allow)?
webOS only installs apps from the LG Content Store: there is no consumer sideloading, so your IPTV options come down to the players your model's Store offers. These ground rules explain most of the roadblocks you hit on LG.
- Installation: only from the LG Content Store. There is no consumer file installation on webOS; developer mode requires an LG Developer account and a session which expires every few dozen hours, pointless for daily use.
- Available players: some applications accepting Xtream Codes or M3U, plus Smart IPTV (SIPTV). Their presence depends on the model and year of the television.
- MAC addresses: certain LG apps, including Smart IPTV, are not configured on the TV but linked from a web portal to the MAC address displayed by the application.
- Consequence: if the player you want is not in the LG Store, do not try to force it — take an alternative from the Store, update webOS, or connect an external device.

🛠️ How do you install an IPTV player on webOS?
It takes three steps: find a player in the Store, enter your access, and, if the catalog is too poor, switch to Smart IPTV via its portal.
1 Open the LG Content Store and install a player
- Press the Home button on the Magic Remote.
- From the home bar, open the LG Content Store.
- Use the search (magnifying glass icon) and type “IPTV” or the name of a player.
- Open the listing, check the exact name of the publisher and any fees, then Install if the app is offered for your model.
The installed app appears in the home bar; move it to the left to keep it at hand. 2 Enter Xtream Codes or M3U
Open the installed player and add your access:
- for Xtream Codes (preferred when offered), create a profile, enter the server

Confirm and let the player download the categories, then open a channel to confirm everything responds. The first refresh may take a moment if the channel package is large: this is normal, do not exit the app while it is loading. The layout of the menus, the EPG and the favorites then depend on the player: it is the player, not webOS, that controls the display, which explains why two different apps do not present the same channels in the same way.
⚠️ Warning: entering a long M3U URL on the TV's virtual keyboard is tedious and prone to mistakes. Prefer voice dictation from the Magic Remote or the LG ThinQ app on the phone, and reread each character before confirming.
3 Alternative: Smart IPTV via MAC address
If no Store player directly accepts your credentials, Smart IPTV (SIPTV) is often present on LG and works differently:
- Install Smart IPTV from the LG Content Store and launch it.
- Note the MAC address displayed by the application on the screen.
- On a phone or computer, open the official portal, enter this MAC address and link your playlist

⚙️ Xtream Codes, M3U or MAC address: which one to choose?
All three provide access to the same content, but are not corrected in the same way, a detail that matters when input is done using the remote control.

The choice is therefore not just a question of taste: above all, it determines how easy it is to fix things when a character is entered incorrectly. On a TV where you type with the remote control, this difference weighs heavily day to day.
💡 Tip: if your player offers Xtream Codes, choose it — a poorly typed password can be found and corrected much faster than an 80-character M3U URL entered using the TV's virtual keyboard.
🧩 Troubleshooting
The targeted player is missing from the LG Content Store
The catalog depends on the model and version of webOS. First update the TV via Settings → Support → Software Update: a newer version sometimes unblocks apps. Otherwise, choose an alternative from the Store or an external Android TV box.
“Invalid username/password” (Xtream Codes)
A field is incorrect or your subscription has expired. Check server, username, password and expiry date; the detailed causes are in Xtream Codes authentication error.
M3U playlist or MAC address not loading
The URL is incomplete or incorrectly copied, or the MAC entered on the portal does not match the one displayed by the app. Check character by character; the guide M3U playlist that doesn't load lists the most common URL errors.
Application freezes or closes on its own
Exit with Home, close the app tile in the switcher, then restart the TV (unplug it for 30 seconds if necessary). Relaunch the player after verifying that the network is responding.
Image freezes or pixelates
The TV's Wi-Fi saturates quickly in HD/4K. Move your router closer, force the 5 GHz band, or connect the TV via Ethernet: this is the most effective fix against dropouts on a large LG screen.
The program guide (EPG) is empty or shifted
The EPG loads after the channels and may take a few minutes. Let the app finish refreshing, check its time zone setting, then exit and relaunch the player to force a refresh.
Nothing suitable on webOS
If no app in the Store accepts your credentials even after updating, the external box remains the most reliable solution: an Android TV box connected via HDMI offers a much wider choice of players, without replacing the television.
💡 How do you keep IPTV stable on webOS?
- Ethernet rather than Wi-Fi. On a large LG screen in HD or 4K, the cable eliminates most stuttering. Failing that, force your router's 5 GHz band.
- Save time typing. The voice dictation of the Magic Remote and the LG ThinQ app on smartphone avoid typing a long M3U URL letter by letter.
- Keep webOS up to date. A software update can unlock a player missing from your current version and fix interface slowness.
- Pin the player. Move its icon to the left of the home bar to open it in one click, without going through the Content Store again.
- Prefer Xtream Codes. When a player offers both, Xtream Codes can be corrected field by field, without re-entering the entire URL for the slightest mistake.
- Restart before troubleshooting. Many temporary glitches (frozen app, missing EPG, channel with no sound) disappear after a simple restart of the television, before you even touch the settings.
- Think about the external box for the future. If you often change players or aim for a richer catalog of apps, an Android TV box frees you from the limits of the LG Store.
To change access later, edit the profile in the player then delete the old one if it is no longer needed; no need to reinstall the application. Also keep your activation credentials handy: they, not the app, provide access to the content, and they will remain valid on any new device.
