Troubleshooting
EPG not working in IPTV: diagnose and resolve
IPTV EPG not working? Four fixes in order: the EPG URL, the app time zone, XMLTV format support and channel mapping. Recreate the profile if nothing loads.
An EPG that remains empty, incomplete or delayed is almost never an IPTV account problem: it is generally a precise setting, in the application or in the EPG configuration, which blocks the display. This guide covers the four checks that resolve the vast majority of cases, complementing our general overview of the EPG.
Which EPG symptom do you have?
Before troubleshooting, identify precisely what is wrong, because the cause differs depending on the symptom:
- No EPG appears on any channel: most often a missing or incorrect EPG URL, or an application that does not load this type of data (see below for VLC).
- The EPG is empty on certain channels only: almost always a mapping problem between the channel name and the EPG identifier.
- The EPG is displayed but with a shifted time: generally a time zone setting in the application, not a data problem.
- The EPG displayed programs then emptied: often an interrupted refresh or an EPG URL that became invalid in the meantime.
1. Is the EPG URL correct?
- Open your application's EPG settings (the exact name varies: "EPG URL", "XMLTV Source", or integrated directly into the Xtream Codes profile).
- Confirm that the address is complete and without spaces or missing characters at the start or end of the field.
- With an M3U configuration, the EPG often requires a URL separate from the channel stream itself: check that the two addresses are not confused.
- With Xtream Codes, the EPG is usually transmitted automatically with the account; if nothing appears, recreate the profile rather than searching for a manual EPG URL.
- Save, then force a manual EPG refresh from the app settings.
2. Is the app time zone set correctly?
A poorly set time zone in the application is the most common cause of an EPG that displays the correct programs, but at the wrong time:
- Open the general settings (not specifically EPG) of the app and look for a time zone or UTC offset setting.
- Set it to your actual time zone, rather than leaving an automatic setting which may misdetect your location.
- Restart the application after the change: the offset is not always corrected live.
This setting only affects the grid display, never the video playback itself. If the image and sound are also out of sync, consult our guide on audio/video offset in IPTV.
3. Does the app support the XMLTV format?
Most IPTV applications rely on a standard format close to XMLTV, which appeared in 2002 to describe TV program schedules in a structured way. If the EPG remains empty despite a correct URL:
- Check that the application supports the XMLTV format and not just a proprietary format.
- Test the same EPG URL in another compatible application to isolate whether the problem is with the application or the data source.
- If the application displays a loading error rather than an empty EPG, the file may be temporarily inaccessible: try again after a few minutes.
4. Is the channel mapping correct?
Mapping links the name of a channel, as it appears in your channel list, to the identifier used in the EPG data. A blank EPG on only some channels, while others are functioning normally, almost always points to this setting:
- Open the relevant channel and look for a manual EPG mapping option (often accessible by holding the channel selected, or from a list edit menu).
- Find the corresponding identifier in the list offered by the application and associate it manually.
- Refresh the EPG after each correction to verify that the grid appears.
Applications like TiviMate or IPTV Smarters Pro offer this manual setting; our complete TiviMate guide details where to find it precisely.
Troubleshooting
- The EPG remains empty after all these checks: delete then recreate the profile (Xtream Codes) or the M3U/EPG source in the application, which forces a complete reload of the data.
- The EPG was working and then stopped with no settings change: simply run a manual refresh again before reconfiguring everything; the interruption is sometimes temporary.
- Only VLC does not display any EPG: this is not a problem to correct, VLC is not designed to build an EPG interface from XMLTV data, regardless of the configuration.
In summary
A non-working EPG is almost always corrected by checking, in order, the EPG URL, the application time zone, XMLTV format compatibility, and then the channel mapping. If nothing works, recreating the profile forces a complete data reload. For a more general presentation of how the EPG works, consult our EPG IPTV guide.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the EPG show “no data” on only certain channels?
This is the most common sign of a mapping problem: the application does not link the exact name of the channel to the identifier used in the EPG data file. The other channels, correctly associated, continue to display their grid normally.
Do I need to restart the application after correcting the EPG URL?
Yes, in most applications a new EPG URL is only taken into account after a restart or a manual data refresh from settings, not automatically on the next screen.
Does the EPG time difference also affect the picture and sound?
No. An EPG lag only affects the times displayed in the program schedule, not the video playback itself. If the picture and sound are also out of sync, this is another problem, detailed in our EPG and program guide article.
Why does VLC never show an EPG, even with a valid URL?
VLC is a general network player, not a complete IPTV application: it opens a stream from an address, but does not build a structured EPG interface from XMLTV data. This is not a configuration problem, but a limitation specific to this player.
How long after a refresh should the EPG reappear?
It depends on the size of the data file and the connection, but the update is generally fast. If the EPG remains empty for several minutes after a manual refresh, recheck the URL before trying again.
Can deleting then re-adding the account resolve a stuck EPG?
Yes, this is an effective solution when manual updating is not enough, especially with Xtream Codes: recreating the profile forces the application to redownload all the data, including the EPG.
