Written for macOS, in Apple Silicon and Intel, with IINA, VLC and an Xtream player from the Mac App Store.

The choice on Mac comes down to three routes that do not serve the same purpose. An Xtream player rebuilds the entire catalog — channels, VOD, series, EPG — as soon as you enter your credentials: it's the closest experience to a set-top box, with categories, favorites and program guide. IINA and VLC open https://play.iptv4ksubscriptions.com/get.php?username=VOTRE_IDENTIFIANT&password=VOTRE_MOT_DE_PASSE&type=m3u_plus&output=ts as a simple playlist: immediate playback, but without VOD folders or a guide. A web player, finally, needs only a browser tab for a quick test, with no installation.

Use an Xtream player for daily viewing, IINA or VLC for troubleshooting, and the web to check an account without installing anything. macOS only adds one constraint to be aware of: its Gatekeeper protection, which filters unsigned apps on first launch — nothing blocking once you know the procedure. 🎒 What do you need to install IPTV on a Mac?

  • A Mac running a recent version of macOS (Apple Silicon M1 to M4, or Intel)
  • Your Apple ID to install from the Mac App Store
  • Your access credentials — server, Xtream Codes username and password, or your M3U URL — received in your activation email
  • A stable Internet connection (5 GHz Wi-Fi or, better, Ethernet via a USB-C adapter for 4K)
  • A few minutes for the initial setup and a channel test

🛠️ How do you install an IPTV player on Mac?

You install an IPTV player on Mac by one of three routes: the Mac App Store is the simplest and fully signed, a player downloaded from its publisher's site needs a one-time Gatekeeper authorization, and IINA or VLC are enough to open an M3U URL. Pick the App Store route for daily use, and keep IINA or VLC on hand for a quick test.

1 Install an Xtream Player from the Mac App Store

This is the simplest way: the app is signed, updated automatically, and Gatekeeper doesn't block anything.

  1. Open the App Store and search for “Xtream” or “IPTV player”.
  2. On the listing, check the publisher name and the required minimum macOS version.
  3. Check that the app is available for your chip (Apple Silicon or Intel) — most are universal.
  4. Install, open, create a profile and enter https://play.iptv4ksubscriptions.com, your username and password.
  5. Let the catalog load, then test a channel.

If you prefer a player downloaded outside the App Store, the IPTV Smarters Pro page gathers the available official links, and our comparison of IPTV applications helps you decide.

2 Authorize an app outside the App Store (Gatekeeper)

A player downloaded from its publisher's site has not been validated by the App Store. On first launch, macOS displays "...cannot be opened because Apple cannot verify that it does not contain malware." This is expected for legitimate third-party software.

  1. Close the dialog box.
  2. Open System Settings > Privacy & Security.
  3. Scroll down to the Security section: macOS shows the app that has just been blocked.
  4. Click Open Anyway, then confirm with Touch ID or your password.

⚠️ Warning: only do this for a file whose download address you are sure of. If the publisher name doesn't match, or if the link doesn't come from the official site, don't open the app — and never disable Gatekeeper in Terminal.

3 Check Apple Silicon or Intel

On an Apple Silicon Mac (M1 to M4), an Intel app is launched via Rosetta 2, which macOS offers to install if necessary; a “universal” or native ARM version launches directly and puts less load on the processor, which matters for a 4K stream. On an Intel Mac, use the Intel or universal version. The App Store or publisher's page indicates compatibility: check it before downloading.

4 Enter Xtream Codes or M3U

Open the installed player and add your account:

  • for Xtream Codes, enter the server https://play.iptv4ksubscriptions.com then your username and password;
  • for an M3U playlist, paste https://play.iptv4ksubscriptions.com/get.php?username=VOTRE_IDENTIFIANT&password=VOTRE_MOT_DE_PASSE&type=m3u_plus&output=ts into the remote URL field.

In IINA, use the File > Open URL… menu, paste https://play.iptv4ksubscriptions.com/get.php?username=VOTRE_IDENTIFIANT&password=VOTRE_MOT_DE_PASSE&type=m3u_plus&output=ts, confirm, then show the playlist with ⌘P to change channels. In VLC, open File > Open Network… (⌘N), paste https://play.iptv4ksubscriptions.com/get.php?username=VOTRE_IDENTIFIANT&password=VOTRE_MOT_DE_PASSE&type=m3u_plus&output=ts, click Open, then use Window > Playlist (⌘⌥P) for the playlist. Neither displays the EPG nor sorts the VOD: that is the trade-off of a plain M3U URL. The VLC guide also covers M3U lists.

Let the player download the categories, then open a channel to confirm everything responds. If the first stream takes a few seconds to start, this is normal: the player builds its channel index on the first load, then the following ones open more quickly.

⚙️ Xtream Codes or M3U: which one to choose?

Xtream Codes and M3U reach the same content, but they do not offer the same comfort on Mac. An Xtream player rebuilds channels, VOD and EPG from three short fields; an M3U URL opened in IINA or VLC plays instantly but shows no program guide and no sorted VOD.

Criterion Xtream Codes M3U List (IINA / VLC)
What you enter Server + username + password A single long URL
EPG (program guide) Loaded automatically Absent
VOD, series, folders Sorted and navigable Unsorted
How to fix an error Field by field, fast Full URL re-entry
Ideal for Daily use A quick test, troubleshooting

💡 Tip: if your player offers both, choose Xtream Codes — a mistyped password is spotted and corrected far faster than an 80-character M3U URL, and you keep the EPG.

🧩 How do you fix common Mac IPTV problems?

“Apple cannot verify this app”

This is the Gatekeeper message for an app outside the App Store. Allow it in System Settings > Privacy and Security, Security section, “Open anyway” button (see step 2). Only unblock it if the file comes from the publisher's official website.

App closes on launch on Apple Silicon

The binary is probably Intel-only and Rosetta 2 is missing. Let macOS install Rosetta 2 when it offers to, or reinstall the publisher's universal version if one exists.

“Invalid username/password” (Xtream Codes)

A field is wrong or your subscription has expired. See Xtream Codes authentication error to check server, port, username, password and expiration date.

IINA or VLC shows only one entry or nothing

The M3U URL is probably cut off on pasting. The guide M3U playlist not loading lists the most common URL errors; paste the full address, without spaces or newlines.

Image freezes or pixelates

Wi-Fi is saturated or bandwidth is lacking. Prefer Ethernet via a USB-C adapter, switch to 5 GHz, or apply the advice in our fixing buffering guide.

No sound or format won't play

It is often a codec that the player does not support. Try the same channel in VLC, which supports more codecs than IINA, or switch back to an Xtream player which transcodes some streams better.

AirPlay to TV not working

Not every player streams via AirPlay, and the stream format may not work. Test before paying for an option; in case of failure, an Android TV box connected to the TV remains more reliable.

💡 Tips for a stable stream

  • Xtream for everyday use, M3U for troubleshooting. The Xtream player gives you the EPG and the sorted VOD; keep IINA or VLC on hand to quickly check an account.
  • Ethernet rather than Wi-Fi. A USB-C to Ethernet adapter eliminates most dropouts, especially in 4K. Failing that, force your router's 5 GHz band.
  • Choose a universal or ARM version. On Apple Silicon, a native app starts faster and heats up less than an Intel app under Rosetta — a real gain on 4K streams.
  • Keep the player updated. From the App Store, updates are automatic; for an app from outside the store, check the publisher's official website regularly.
  • A web player to test without installing. If your service offers a web player, open it in Safari or Chrome with your Xtream credentials: ideal for confirming an account before configuring an app.
  • IINA for fluidity, VLC for codecs. On macOS, IINA is the most pleasant on a daily basis; save VLC for exotic streams.

To change your account later, edit the profile in the player, then delete the old one if it is no longer needed. And if you set up other devices, our guides by device follow the same logic for Smart TVs, Android boxes and mobiles.

Frequently asked questions

Why does macOS block some IPTV players on first launch?

Gatekeeper checks the origin of applications. A block is not unusual for legitimate third-party software, but it must always come from the official site of its publisher before being authorized.

Does the same player work on Apple Silicon and an Intel Mac?

Not always. Some publishers release separate versions or a universal version; check advertised compatibility before downloading. On Apple Silicon, an Intel app is launched via Rosetta 2, which macOS offers to install if necessary.

Xtream Codes or M3U: which is better to enter on Mac?

Xtream Codes when the player offers it: server, username and password can be corrected field by field, and the EPG loads. An M3U URL opened in IINA or VLC gives immediate playback but without a guide or sorted VOD.

IINA or VLC for IPTV on Mac?

IINA is a very fluid native Apple Silicon player that is well integrated into macOS; VLC remains the cross-platform reference and handles more codecs. Both open the same M3U URL — choose whichever feels more comfortable to use.

Does VLC display the same functions as on Windows?

Yes, opening an M3U network stream works the same on macOS, with a slightly different menu depending on the version of VLC installed.

Should you disable Gatekeeper from Terminal?

No. Never use a command that shuts down Gatekeeper globally: it weakens the entire Mac. Allow only the relevant app in System Settings > Privacy & Security, one app at a time.

Can I watch IPTV in a browser on Mac?

Sometimes. Some services offer a web player accessible in Safari or Chrome with your Xtream credentials — practical for a test without installing anything, but often without EPG or fine-grained favorites management. A dedicated player remains more complete for daily use.

Can I use AirPlay from my Mac to my Smart TV?

It depends on the player, stream format and AirPlay receiver. Test this feature before choosing a paid player option; in the event of failure, a box connected to the TV remains more reliable.
