7 best free M3U IPTV playlists in France (2026)

A search for “free M3U France playlist” quickly leads to two extremes: pages that promise all the premium channels in 4K for zero euros, and technical lists without any explanation. Neither really helps. An M3U playlist is not a magic channel bundle. It is a text file which brings together stream addresses, sometimes with a channel name, an EPG identifier and a resolution indication.

We therefore started from a specific source: the streams folder of the open source iptv-org project. We only retained files whose name begins with fr, as requested. Each file was downloaded and analyzed line by line to count #EXTINF entries, distinct URLs, declared resolutions, and warnings written in the metadata.

This ranking is not a test of continuous availability. We have not launched 495 channels for several hours and we do not claim to measure their stability. Rather, the ratings evaluate the readability of the source, the richness of the file, the quality of the metadata, the usefulness for an audience in France and the ease of verification. This is an important distinction: a link present today may expire tomorrow.

⚠️ Know before you start: iptv-org indicates that it does not store any videos and aggregates links submitted by the community to publicly accessible streams. The repository nevertheless provides its data without guarantee. The presence of a URL in GitHub does not replace the verification of distribution rights. Arcom points out that IPTV is a legal technology, but watching protected content via an unauthorized source is not.

Quick comparison of M3U France playlists

Here is the exact state of the ten French files at the time of our audit. The number shown represents distinct entries and URLs in each file, not a promise of permanently available channels.

The seven active lists total 495 unique URLs. After standardizing the names, we noted 420 different titles: the same channel or the same program can therefore appear under several variations of name or broadcast, without the URLs being identical. The figure of 495 should not be presented as “495 unique French channels”.

How did we establish this ranking?

Our method favors verifiable elements rather than marketing promises:

1. Strictly French scope: only fr.m3u and the fr_*.m3u files in the streams folder were studied.
2. Structured counting: an entry corresponds to a #EXTINF line followed by its feed URL. URLs have been deduplicated in each file and across the entire perimeter.
3. Reading metadata: Mentions like (1080p), (720p), [Geo-blocked] and [Not 24/7] were counted as they appeared. We have not transformed them into actual quality measures.
4. Source identification: a list clearly linked to Pluto TV, Rakuten TV, BFM, TRACE or Samsung is easier to understand and control than a general aggregate.
5. No false tests: we have not asserted an availability rate, a latency or a buffering level without a continuous measurement campaign.

1. fr_pluto.m3u — the best balance of clarity and variety

There are FAST channels organized around a program, a series or a genre: cinema, action, documentaries, youth, reality TV, classic series and current affairs. Among the names noted are for example C'est pas sorcier, BBC Drama, Blue Bloods, SpongeBob and several cinema versions of Pluto TV.

The main advantage is not just volume. The file name clearly indicates the ecosystem concerned. Pluto TV operates on a FAST model, i.e. free, ad-supported linear television. This makes the origin more readable than in a general list mixing many domains.

Of the 134 entries, 33 announce 720p resolution and 101 do not specify their definition in the title. “Not specified” does not mean poor quality: it simply means that the source file does not provide this information. Content and URLs may change depending on Pluto TV programming.

fr.m3u is the file to choose when the number of options takes precedence over simplicity. It contains 227 entries, all associated with a distinct URL at the time of our extraction. Its selection covers national and international channels accessible in France, information, regional television, culture, music, free sport and local channels.

The metadata is richer than in several specialized lists: 74 titles announce 1080p, 67 720p and 19 576p. The other 67 do not display an explicit resolution. The file also reports 9 geoblocked entries and 8 channels not available 24 hours a day. These warnings are useful because they explain some of the black screens without suggesting that the player is necessarily broken.

This breadth has a cost: the file aggregates very different broadcasters. A URL can come directly from a publisher, a video distribution network or a technical platform. The observed catalog mixes cinema, series, documentaries, animation and thematic channels. There we notably find Top Gear France, Mr Bean Animé, Euronews Français, 100% Docs and several FilmRise channels.

Rakuten TV officially offers a free, ad-supported offering as well as linear TV channels. For the user, the playlist remains a technical way of opening these streams in a compatible player; the Rakuten TV application remains more suitable for search functions, program listings and catalog changes.

Its strength is its consistency. You immediately know what you are going to find, the titles are explicit and the URLs use the distribution infrastructure associated with the group. On the other hand, it is obviously not a general playlist: it meets a need for continuous and regional information.

The file is attached to the French scope of the repository, but its natural audience is Persian-speaking. This is a useful nuance: “France file” does not necessarily mean “content only in French”. The 23 titles do not specify their resolution, which reduces the quality of the metadata available before playback.

7. fr_samsung.m3u — a small list, not the full Samsung catalog

The name can be confusing. fr_samsung.m3u does not reproduce the entire Samsung TV Plus catalog available in the official application. When we checked, the file only contained 4 entries: Mytime Movies, Stormcast Novelas TV, TNTV and Zee One Français. Two were marked 1080p, one 720p, and one with no resolution listed.

Samsung officially presents TV Plus as a free service financed by advertising, with a much larger French catalog on compatible devices. This small M3U remains practical for quickly testing a player, but it should not be used to estimate the actual breadth of Samsung TV Plus.

Which French files exist but are empty?

A serious list must also show what is not working. The following files were present in the streams folder, but contained only the #EXTM3U header, without any #EXTINF lines or video URLs:

• fr_fashiontv.m3u: 0 streams;
• fr_groupecanalplus.m3u: 0 streams;
• fr_groupem6.m3u: 0 streams.

Their name therefore does not constitute a promise of free access to FashionTV, Canal+ or M6. An empty M3U file is simply a valid envelope with no content. It may be retained by the project in anticipation of future contributions or after removal of old entries; without detailed history, it would be risky to state the exact reason.

M3U URLs to copy into VLC

To load the current version of a file, use its raw.githubusercontent.com address. This URL returns the plain text of the M3U, unlike the GitHub page which displays the code with its buttons and navigation.

Do not copy these links from a site that shortens or rehosts them. By using the raw URL of the official repository, you clearly see the repository owner and file path. You also avoid a frozen copy that would no longer receive corrections from the community.

How do you open an M3U playlist in VLC?

VLC is a good place to start because it's free, open source, and available on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Download it from VideoLAN, not from a download site that adds its own installer.

Recommended method: open the remote URL

1. Copy one of the raw URLs above.
2. Open VLC.
3. On Windows or Linux, choose Media → Open Network Stream. The shortcut is Ctrl+N.
4. On macOS, open File → Open Network.
5. Paste the address into the network field, then start playing.
6. Open View → Playlist to browse channels. The shortcut is usually Ctrl+L or Cmd+L.

The point of the remote URL is simple: VLC reloads the current file. If you download fr.m3u to your computer, its structure will stay frozen at the date of download. Video URLs in it may continue to work, but additions and deletions to the repository will not be picked up automatically.

Downloading the file locally

You may still prefer a local file, to archive or modify it:

1. Open the file's GitHub page.
2. Click Raw.
3. Save the page with the extension .m3u.
4. In VLC, use Media → Open File.
5. Select the saved M3U.

Why does a stream display a black screen?

A correctly loaded M3U may contain channels that cannot be played. The file and the video are two different resources: GitHub can respond normally while the broadcaster's server refuses playback.

The most common causes are:

• Expired URL: the address has changed and the contribution has not yet been corrected;
• geoblocking: the broadcaster limits playback to a geographical area;
• partial broadcasting: eight entries of fr.m3u were explicitly marked [Not 24/7];
• channel temporarily offline: a live event does not broadcast permanently;
• required headers: some servers expect a particular user agent or referrer;
• unsupported format: an old player may fail on a recent codec or HLS variant;
• insufficient bandwidth: a 1080p source may require more headroom than an SD channel.

The M3U format is neutral. It is also used to organize personal radios, local videos, free FAST channels or protected streams distributed without authorization. The file therefore does not alone determine the legality of what it references.

Arcom explains that IPTV is not illegal in itself. It becomes illegal when it allows access to protected content without the consent of the rights holders. The authority cites in particular offers with an abnormally large catalog, films still in theaters, dubious means of payment and unauthorized sports broadcasts among the warning signals.

For its part, iptv-org claims that its repository does not store any video files and gathers links to publicly available streams submitted by the community. The project provides for a reporting procedure for rights holders. This statement describes how it works; it does not legally guarantee every URL at every time.

The safest course of action is to:

• favor lists whose free platform is clearly identified;
• check the domain that hosts each feed before storing it;
• use official applications when they offer the same channel;
• never confuse “public URL” and “right of rebroadcast”;
• avoid any playlist promising Canal+, beIN Sports, Netflix or films still in theaters without a subscription.

Security and privacy: what does an M3U reveal?

An M3U file is text, but the URLs it contains contact third-party servers. When you start a channel, the server may receive your IP address, connection time, player type, and some common network information. This is the normal operation of a video request, not proof of malicious intent, but you need to know which sources you are connecting to.

Adopt a few simple rules:

1. get the file from the official repository github.com/iptv-org/iptv;
2. open the M3U in a text editor if you want to inspect the domains;
3. keep VLC and your system updated;
4. never import your personal credentials into a public playlist;
5. beware of copies that add shortened URLs, executables or payment forms;
6. delete channels whose origin seems impossible to verify.

A VPN does not turn an unauthorized source into a legal source. It can also trigger more geoblocks on platforms that limit distribution by territory. For a French public list, the first step is therefore not to hide your connection, but to check the source.

M3U or official applications: what to choose?

The playlist offers freedom: a single player, an editable list, no account required to read the file itself. It is suitable for technical users, systems like VLC, Kodi or Jellyfin and people who want to group several public channels.

The official application generally offers a better experience: search engine, program guide, parental controls, subtitles, playback resume, detailed information and assistance. M3U remains useful for testing, centralizing or using a device that does not offer the desired application.

Verdict: which playlist to choose?

For most readers, start with fr_pluto.m3u. Its catalog of 134 entries is rich enough to discover the format without being as scattered as the general list. If your priority is channel count and you're willing to do some sorting, fr.m3u is the logical choice with 227 entries.

Rakuten stands out for cinema and its numerous 1080p mentions. BFM is the most direct file for news. TRACE+ and Persiana respond to specific musical or linguistic audiences. Samsung, finally, mainly serves as a small test list: its four entries do not represent the complete Samsung TV Plus catalog.

The right playlist is not the one with the most spectacular numbers. It is the one whose source, limits and use you understand. Keep the official GitHub URL, accept that a public feed may disappear, and prefer the broadcaster's app when you need a stable, supported experience.
